We understand that language forms a vital part of the whole curriculum, helping each child to interpret and make sense of the world they live in and gives each child the means to communicate their feelings, ideas and experiences. Children develop their English skills primarily through spoken language, reading and writing. At Glynne Primary School we aim to provide the children with a rich, in depth and creative English curriculum.

Before children can learn to read or write successfully, it is vital that they have a wide and varied vocabulary which they use confidently and appropriately in the spoken form. Therefore, right from the start of their educational journey we provide a language rich environment where adults engage in conversations with children, explicitly teach new vocabulary, give children the opportunity to speak out loud for a variety of purposes and share a wide range of quality texts.

From an early age many of us will have fond memories of stories that were shared with us by our parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters, as well as other close relatives and family friends. We believe that a love of books should be at the heart of every child’s learning. There is something magical about getting lost in a good book; something that everyone should experience!

For a child, learning to write can be a tricky business, not least because good writing involves handwriting, spelling, grammar and punctuation, not to mention what we want to write and who we are writing for. However, learning to write and having the ability to write with confidence and accuracy, is an essential life skill. Children use their writing in almost all other subjects of the curriculum. Good writing also gives children a voice to share their ideas with the world.
